EMT-Basic Program Initial Training
Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B)
The EMT-Basic program is the entry-level 140 hour training program meeting two nights per week.
Students who successfully complete this program are eligible to take the National Registry of
EMTs examination and subsequently apply for state licensure. The EMT-Basic course is a pre-
requisite for the EMT-I and Paramedic programs.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) offers an exciting and challenging health-care career for
individuals interested in providing emergency care in the pre-hospital setting. EMT-Basic licensure
qualifies the student for an entry-level position as an emergency care provider with municipal and
private ambulance services as well as some hospital emergency departments. The growing
recognition of the EMT as a professional member of the health-care team has expanded career
opportunities for graduates. EMT-Basics are the cornerstone of EMS in the United States.
Basic EMT’s are taught to systematically evaluate a patient’s condition and provide assessment-
based treatment. Our program follows the 1994 National Standard Curriculum for the Emergency
Medical Technician-Basic, with supplementary materials added to meet the latest New Hampshire
Transition requirements. The curriculum includes airway management, oxygen therapy, patient
assessment, medical emergencies, traumatic injuries, special patient populations, and EMS
operations. We teach using interactive classroom lectures, dynamic hands-on practical training,
and a field internship with a busy ambulance service.
Students who successfully complete this program are eligible to take the National Registry of
EMTs examination and subsequently apply for state licensure. Our program is approved by both
the New Hampshire and Massachusetts state EMS offices. Note that in addition to the meeting
times listed, each program will meet on one Friday night for Hazardous Materials training and on
one Saturday day for Vehicle Extrication training. Details of these times are available; just call our
office.
Prerequisites: 18 years of age prior to the practical examination, Current BLS for Healthcare
Provider (CPR) card, or this CPR course is available at NEEMSI, please inquire.
